Reviews: The Quiet American

May 10, 2001

The Quiet American

Throughout Hanoi boys and young men try to make money by selling local copies of popular books. This classic by Graeme Greene is one of them. A novel set in Saigon in the late 50's, a hauntingly prescient observation of the entry into Indochina of a "Third Force" (the USA). At the same time it looks at the weary love of the old (through the eyes of English journalist Fowler) and naive love of the young (represented by the American, Pyle) and their different approaches to life.

While we were in Hanoi we observed the making of the film, staring Michael Caine as Fowler and Brendan Frasier as Pyle. We look forward to the film.
