A Bright Shining Lie
Our recent trip to Vietnam lead me, via a friend, to read this excellent biography, which at the same time is a fantastic history of the "Vietnam" war (known in Vietnam, appropriately, as the "American War"). As one too young to have appreciated fully the history of the war, it was an eye opener. At the same time is is an incredibly well written book by a professional journalist who worked in Vietnam during the war. Justifiably, he won a Pulitzer prize for this book.
The sheer breadth and audacity of the crimes perpetrated on the people of vietnam, firstly by an arrogant USA (no changes in 25 years) and secondly by an uncaring world, are amazing. A large book but a superb read.
